Hi folks, and welcome to another round of “Life Lately” – the regular blog post that really didn’t end up as a regular blog post! It’s been a wee while since I posted last *cough* 3 weeks *cough* and I apologise for that! As I said on Twitter recently, I do actually have a genuine and legitimate reason for not feeling very creative and not having much time to post.
I have today off – yay! – so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to sit down (with the peace and quiet of an empty house and most of the housework done) to get some writing done! This blog is serving as a sort of diary entry, along with an update on one of my goals for 2017.
“Which goal?”, you may ask?
Why, my goal to learn to drive, dear reader!
To recap a little on this: My provisional licence runs out in November this year and I wanted to finally get my butt into gear and get my full driving licence. I decided in the last few months that an intensive driving course would probably be the best one for me. All I had to do was find a suitable local driving instructor that I could work with before November. I got in touch with one back at the beginning of August but unfortunately didn’t hear back from which, in part due to my laziness of not doing more, has pushed things back a bit.
At the end of August, I finally decided to bite the bullet and book my Theory Test so that I would at least have that under my belt. Cue all the studying I could manage over the last month alongside work and other life commitments. It was actually quite intense, which is probably mostly to do with my personality, but I also wanted to make sure I learned everything I could and did it right. Driving is a pretty serious matter and it’s a lot of power to control a car so I wanted to take it seriously and do it justice.
I have also finally booked a driving instructor for a semi-intensive driving course. They advised not going with 30 hours of driving in the one week which I’m good with, as I think that would be too intense, even for me! Instead, I’m going to be doing it over 3 weeks, taking my practical test at the end of that 3rd week.
I’m quite excited to get started! But also really nervous! It’s been almost 10 years since I got my provisional licence and I can’t believe I’m finally getting to the point where I will actually be able to drive. It’s a little surreal. If all goes plan, I’ll have my licence by the end of 2017 and I’m really happy about that! Unfortunately, circumstances mean that I probably won’t have a car by the end of the year but that’s in the works for the beginning of 2018 🙂
Anyway, I finally sat my Theory Test on Saturday and I’m very pleased to say that I passed! And passed with pretty good scores, even if I do say so myself! While I know that, as the name suggests, this is only the theory of driving and that it will be very different once I’m in the car, I feel a lot more confident in my abilities and my knowledge when it comes to learning to drive.
Now I just need to get through 30 hours of lessons and pass the practical test. Easy peasy… Wish me luck!
P.S – I will try to be better at posting more frequently again since things have calmed down some!
Tell me about your driving experiences in the comments below! How long did it take you to learn to drive? What aspects did you struggle with? What do you love most about driving? And for the pedestrians among us, why do you prefer not to have a licence?
